Somalia will face Ivory Coast on Tuesday, September 29, on Matchday 2 of Group C in the 2027 AFCON Qualifiers. How Somalia Arrive
Somalia opened its qualifying campaign with a 2-1 defeat against The Gambia.
The Scorpions took the lead in the 18th minute when Ebrima Colley converted from the penalty spot. Somalia, however, stayed in the game and eventually found an equalizer during the second half.
Bilal Njie made it 1-1 in the 72nd minute, but the score remained level for only 11 minutes. Muhammed Badamosi, who had been introduced at halftime, finished from a Suleiman Camara pass in the 83rd minute to secure all three points for The Gambia.
The result leaves Somalia without a point heading into a demanding second fixture against an Ivorian side that made a winning start.
How Ivory Coast Arrive
Ivory Coast began its qualifying campaign with a 2-0 victory over Ghana at the Stade de la Paix in Bouaké.
Hervé Renard’s side broke the deadlock in the 44th minute. Malick Yalcouyé, one of the newcomers included in the squad, scored after being set up by Franck Kessié.
Yalcouyé was involved again after halftime when he won a penalty. Kessié converted from the spot in the 58th minute to complete the 2-0 victory.
Ivory Coast Looks to Maintain Its Perfect Start in Group C
After Matchday 1, Ivory Coast and The Gambia lead Group C with three points each, while Ghana and Somalia remain without a point.
The section does not contain any of the three automatically qualified AFCON 2027 co-hosts, meaning the teams finishing first and second after six matchdays will qualify directly for the finals in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.
For Somalia, Tuesday's match provides an opportunity to respond after coming close to collecting a point against The Gambia. Ivory Coast, meanwhile, can move to six points and strengthen its early position in the race for one of the group's two qualifying places.
