How South Sudan Arrive
South Sudan opened the group stage with a 2-1 defeat against Malawi at the Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe.
Babatunde Adepoju gave the hosts the lead in the 20th minute before Joseph Dhata equalized for South Sudan shortly after halftime in the 48th.
The Bright Stars were level for only 16 minutes. Lloyd Njaliwa scored in the 64th minute to restore Malawi’s advantage and secure all three points.
South Sudan therefore enters its first home game of the group stage still searching for its first points and facing one of the most decorated national teams in African soccer.
How Egypt Arrive
Egypt was also unable to win its opening qualifier. The Pharaohs played out a 0-0 draw with Angola at the Cairo International Stadium, collecting one point from Matchday 1.
Hossam Hassan’s team started Mohamed Salah, but could not find a breakthrough against an Angola side that successfully protected the scoreless draw throughout the match.
The result leaves Egypt on one point ahead of its trip to Juba, where the seven-time African champions will seek their first victory of the qualifying campaign. Egypt will also be without Mohamed Salah for the match. The Egyptian Football Association confirmed that the captain will not face South Sudan due to the artificial playing surface in Juba, a decision that had been agreed with the player before the match against Angola.
Egypt Targets Its First Group B Victory
After the opening round, Malawi leads Group B with three points following its victory over South Sudan. Egypt and Angola each have one point after their draw in Cairo, while the Bright Stars remain on zero.
Group B does not contain any of the three automatically qualified AFCON 2027 host nations. As a result, the teams finishing first and second after six matchdays will qualify directly for the finals in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.
For South Sudan, Tuesday’s match provides an opportunity to respond at home after its opening defeat. Egypt, meanwhile, will look to turn its Matchday 1 draw into momentum and collect three points before the qualifying campaign resumes in the next international window.
