How Mozambique Enter the Match
Mozambique opened its qualifying campaign with an encouraging 1-1 home draw against Senegal, one of the continent’s leading national teams.
The Lions of Teranga took the lead in the 32nd minute through Nicolas Jackson, but the Mambas responded before halftime. Geny Catamo equalized during first-half stoppage time to send the teams into the break level.
Neither side managed to find a winner after the interval, allowing Mozambique to take a point from its opening qualifier before playing at home in Maputo again on Matchday 2.
How Sudan Arrive
Sudan made an even stronger start, earning a 1-0 victory over Ethiopia in its opening Group J match.
The game remained scoreless for most of the 90 minutes, with Ethiopia resisting Sudan’s attempts to find a breakthrough.
The decisive moment finally arrived in the 86th minute, when Mohamed Eisa scored the only goal of the match and secured all three points. The result left Sudan alone at the top of Group J after the opening round.
An Important Early Battle in Group J
After Matchday 1, Sudan leads Group J with three points. Mozambique and Senegal have one point each, while Ethiopia remains without a point.
The section does not contain any of the three automatically qualified AFCON 2027 host nations, meaning the teams finishing first and second after six matchdays will qualify directly for the finals in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.
For Mozambique, victory in Maputo would move the Mambas above their opponent after an encouraging result against Senegal. Sudan, meanwhile, has the opportunity to start the campaign with consecutive wins and strengthen its position before qualifying resumes in November.
