Madagascar and Tanzania enter Matchday 2 of Group L after opening their AFCON 2027 Qualifiers campaigns with defeats. The Barea need points in a group where Tanzania has already secured its place at the finals as a co-host.

How Madagascar Arrive
Madagascar came close to collecting a positive result in its opening qualifier but ultimately suffered a 2-1 away defeat against Nigeria at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium.
The Barea took a surprise lead in the 16th minute through Ehsan Kari. George Ilenikhena, however, equalized for the Super Eagles during first-half stoppage time.
Nigeria completed the comeback in the 65th minute through Moses Usor and protected its advantage through the final whistle. Corentin Martins’ side therefore enters Matchday 2 still searching for its first points.
How Tanzania Arrive
Tanzania also failed to collect a point in its opening fixture. The Taifa Stars suffered a 2-0 home defeat against Guinea-Bissau, which produced one of Group L’s most significant results on Matchday 1.
Franculino Djú opened the scoring in the 33rd minute before Mama Baldé doubled the visitors’ advantage in the 58th.
The defeat does not threaten Tanzania’s place at the next AFCON. The national team has already qualified automatically as one of the tournament’s three co-hosts alongside Kenya and Uganda.
A Particularly Important Match for Madagascar
Group L has a different qualification equation from most sections. Because Tanzania is already assured of a place at AFCON 2027, only the highest-placed team among Nigeria, Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau will claim the group’s additional qualifying berth.
After Matchday 1, Guinea-Bissau and Nigeria both have three points, while Madagascar and Tanzania lost their opening matches.
That makes Tuesday’s game particularly important for the Barea. A second consecutive defeat could quickly complicate their position in a six-match campaign. For Tanzania, meanwhile, the qualifiers also provide competitive preparation ahead of the tournament it will co-host next year.
