Dortmund breaks Koln hearts with stoppage-time win
Borussia Dortmund looked set to be held to a goalless draw by Koln, but substitute Maximilian Beier had other ideas at Signal Iduna Park with a stoppage-time winner to keep his side in touch in the Bundesliga title race with a 1-0 win.
The match looked set to be heading for a stalemate at Signal Iduna Park until the 96th minute, when substitute Beier slotted home to snatch all three points for Dortmund.
Koln had the clearest opportunity of the first half, with Said El Mala slicing wide with only Gregor Kobel to beat in the 19th minute.
Serhou Guirassy had a great chance to break the deadlock seven minutes into the second half, but shot straight at Marvin Schwabe from point-blank range.
The hosts continued to generate the greater attacking threat. Felix Nmecha had an effort tipped over, while Schwabe also denied Julian Brandt.
However, Dortmund finally grabbed the breakthrough with one of the final kicks of the game, as Fabio Silva set up fellow substitute Beier for a dramatic winner.
Dortmund is now unbeaten in each of its past 10 home games in all competitions and needed this win to stay in touch with Bayern Munich, after the defending champion and league leader stayed perfect with a 3-0 win at Borussia Moenchengladbach earlier in the day.
Dortmund also saw second-placed RB Leipzig demolish Augsburg 6-0 on the road, making this home win all the more important.
By contrast, Koln failed to record a single shot on target in a Bundesliga match for the first time since doing so against Bayer Leverkusen in March 2024.
