Tragedy in Mexico

Mexico City, July 1 (EFE).- Three people have died from asphyxiation during the celebrations in the Mexican capital for Mexico's victory over Ecuador in the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup, reported the Health Sector Command Post of the Government of Mexico City this Wednesday.

The deceased are two women, aged 48 and 19, and a 44-year-old man.

"From the Government of Mexico City, we are in contact with their families to provide them with all the necessary support and assistance," stated the head of the Mexico City government, Clara Brugada, on social media.

Sequence of events

The authorities detailed that one of the emergencies took place at the intersection of Hamburgo and Lancaster streets, in the Juárez neighborhood, where two unconscious people were found.

Emergency personnel, including doctors, firefighters, Civil Protection personnel, officials from the capital's Government Secretariat, and police officers, arrived at the scene and performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) before transferring the patients to a hospital.

However, after receiving specialized medical care and advanced resuscitation maneuvers, the death by asphyxiation of a 44-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman was confirmed. Both have already been identified by their relatives.

In addition, a 48-year-old woman was found unconscious on Berna Street, also in the Juárez neighborhood, in the Cuauhtémoc district. The doctors performed resuscitation maneuvers on her, and she was subsequently transferred to a hospital, where she ultimately died.

According to the official medical report, the cause of death was also asphyxiation.

The official government response

The Government of Mexico City expressed its condolences to the families and friends of the victims and assured that it will provide the necessary support during this time.

“With my heart in my hand, I send a hug and my most sincere condolences to their loved ones. We reiterate our call to always celebrate with responsibility, care, and empathy," said Brugada.

According to the capital's government, around one million people gathered on Tuesday night at the Ángel de la Independencia to celebrate the Mexican national team's 2-0 victory over Ecuador, a result that allowed the team to advance to the round of 16 of the World Cup organized by Mexico, the United States, and Canada
