Gilberto Mora showed why he is considered one of Mexico's brightest young talents. The Club Tijuana midfielder was Javier Aguirre's surprise starter against Ecuador in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 32 and delivered an impressive performance with his creativity, composure and attacking link-up play.
Beyond his display on the pitch, Mora made history by breaking a long-standing Mexican record and joining an exclusive World Cup list where only the legendary Pelé ranks ahead of him.
Gilberto Mora Becomes Mexico's Youngest World Cup Starter
At 17 years old, Gilberto Mora became the youngest Mexican player ever to start a FIFA World Cup match.
He surpassed a record that had stood since Uruguay 1930, when Manuel "Chaquetas" Rosas started at 18 years and 88 days.
