How Guinea-Bissau Arrive
Guinea-Bissau produced one of the notable results of Matchday 1 by earning a 2-0 away victory over Tanzania.
The Djurtus opened the scoring in the 33rd minute through Franculino Djú. Mama Baldé then doubled the advantage in the 58th minute to secure all three points.
The victory gave Emiliano Té’s side an ideal start and left Guinea-Bissau top of Group L on goal difference.
The result carries added importance because of the group's unusual qualification scenario. Tanzania has already secured its place at the next AFCON as a co-host, leaving Guinea-Bissau, Nigeria and Madagascar competing for the group's additional qualifying berth.
How Nigeria Arrive
Nigeria also opened with a victory, although the Super Eagles had to come from behind to defeat Madagascar 2-1.
The Barea took a surprise lead in the 16th minute through Ehsan Kari, before George Ilenikhena equalized for Nigeria during first-half stoppage time.
The winning goal arrived in the 65th minute. Moses Usor, who had come off the bench and was making his senior international debut, scored to complete the comeback.
Eric Chelle’s side is playing this opening qualifying window without Victor Osimhen, who was officially ruled out of both the Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau matches while recovering from a muscle injury.
A Direct Battle at the Top of Group L
Guinea-Bissau and Nigeria are the two non-host teams that opened the campaign with three points. The Djurtus lead on goal difference following their 2-0 win over Tanzania, while the Super Eagles sit just behind them after beating Madagascar 2-1.
The structure of Group L gives Tuesday's matchup additional significance. Because Tanzania has already qualified automatically as an AFCON 2027 co-host, only the highest-placed team among Guinea-Bissau, Nigeria and Madagascar will claim the group's additional place at the finals.
A victory would allow either side to finish the opening international window with six points and take an important early advantage in that race.
