Cape Verde will look to recover from its opening defeat against Mali, while Rwanda enters Matchday 2 of Group K with three points after defeating Liberia.
Cape Verde will host Rwanda on Tuesday, September 29, on Matchday 2 of Group K in the 2027 AFCON Qualifiers. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:00 PM ET / 9:00 AM PT at the Estádio Nacional de Cabo Verde, officially named Estádio Nacional Tubarões Azuis, in Praia. How Cape Verde Arrive
Cape Verde opened its qualifying campaign with a 3-1 away defeat against Mali at the Stade du 26 Mars in Bamako.
The hosts struck early through Ange Martial Tia, who opened the scoring in the fifth minute. The Blue Sharks responded almost immediately, with Sidny Lopes Cabral equalizing in the 10th minute.
Mali regained the lead before halftime through Nene Dorgeles, who scored in the 39th minute. Dorgeles struck again six minutes after the restart to complete his brace and make it 3-1.
The result left Cape Verde without a point after Matchday 1 and increases the importance of its first home fixture of the qualifying campaign.
How Rwanda Arrive
Rwanda, meanwhile, enjoyed a much stronger opening match, defeating Liberia 3-1 at the Amahoro Stadium in Kigali.
The Amavubi made a fast start as Abeddy Biramahire scored after only two minutes before Leroy-Jacques Mickels doubled the advantage in the 33rd.
Sylvanus Nimely pulled one back for Liberia in the 38th minute, but Joy-Lance Mickels converted a penalty in the 44th to restore Rwanda's two-goal lead before halftime. There were no further goals after the break.
Cape Verde Looks to Respond in Group K
After Matchday 1, Mali and Rwanda both have three points in Group K, while Cape Verde and Liberia remain without a point.
The section does not include any of the three automatically qualified AFCON 2027 co-hosts, meaning the teams finishing first and second after six matchdays will qualify directly for the finals in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.
For Cape Verde, collecting points at home would prevent the Blue Sharks from losing further ground after the defeat in Bamako. Rwanda, meanwhile, has the chance to begin the group stage with consecutive positive results and strengthen its early position in the qualification race.
