Liberali turns down AC Milan return to join Como
Mattia Liberali believes Cesc Fabregas is the perfect manager to aid his development after joining Como from Serie B side Catanzaro.
Liberali has put pen to paper on a five-year contract with Como, which will play in the Champions League this season, after his €6m release clause was activated.
The 19 year-old, who rose through AC Milan's academy ranks, was reportedly wanted by his former club, but he has instead chosen to sign for Como.
He made 29 league appearances for Catanzaro in 2025-2026, scoring three goals and providing four assists to help his team finish fifth and in the promotion play-offs first round.
Catanzaro played out a 2-2 draw on aggregate against Monza across both legs of the play-off final, but because its opponent finished higher in the league table, it was promoted to Serie A having been relegated the season before.
"It's a real thrill to be able to start my journey at Como," Liberali said. "I'm really keen to develop and improve, and I've found we share a lot of common ground with the club in this regard.
"I've also spoken to the manager, and I think the playing philosophy is perfect for me. I can't wait to take to the pitch at the Sinigaglia and meet the fans."
Liberali is Como's fourth addition this summer.
Alvaro Morata has made his loan move from last season permanent, while Andres Cuenca, Luis Milla and Kaiki Bruno da Silva have also moved to the club.
"Mattia is a creative player with excellent technical ability and confidence in possession," Fabregas said. "He can operate in tight spaces, create chances and contribute in the final third. We believe his qualities fit our style and look forward to helping him continue his development."
Como begins its Serie A campaign away to Udinese on 22 August before returning to Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia on 13 September against Bologna.
