Ilkay Gündogan Slams Ronald Araujo for His Red Card
The German international was very critical of how the Uruguayan defender dealt with the action that would ultimately condemn Barcelona.
Ilkay Gündogan suffered on the pitch as Barcelona was eliminated from the Champions League by PSG, who took advantage of the numerical superiority gained after Ronald Araujo's expulsion in the 29th minute of the first half.
Precisely, the German international spoke about the red card shown to the Uruguayan defender in a disappointed tone after the match. And not in good terms. "This is the Champions League. No matter the opponent, it's impossible to come back if one of your players is sent off. We are very disappointed. We felt we had control of the game before the red card," he began.
"If it's a foul, it's a red card. I haven't seen the replay, and surely you know better. It's difficult to say, but in these crucial moments, you must be sure you can win back the ball. If you don't get the ball, and I don't know if he touched it or not, you should let it go," Gündogan commented, and he didn't stop there.
"I prefer to concede the goal or leave the forward with a one-on-one. He played the long ball, and I don't know if he reached the ball. I could have left the chance to our goalkeeper to save us or even concede a goal. Being down to ten men due to the red card so early in the game kills you," the midfielder concluded.
Vitinha's goal, "another mistake"
Gündogan's frustration didn't end with Araujo. He continued talking about Vitinha's goal. "Again, a mistake. I think we had to step out and not let him shoot. He was alone. It's not something we haven't trained. The closest player to the ball has to step out. We were three against three on the corner, and Vitinha was the fourth man, and someone had to step out. Nobody did, or they did it too late. It was a good shot and it was the second goal. It was an unnecessary goal, but now it's too late."
