Leon Goretzka could be close to beginning a new adventure away from Germany. After bringing his time at Bayern Munich to an end, the 31-year-old midfielder is a free agent and is now negotiating a potential move to Aston Villa.
Aston Villa Negotiate Leon Goretzka Signing
According to transfer journalist Matteo Moretto, talks are underway between the two parties in an attempt to reach an agreement. It is an especially attractive opportunity for the English club, as they would not have to pay a transfer fee for a player with enormous experience at the highest level.
For Unai Emery, Goretzka could also be an ideal fit for what he needs to strengthen his midfield.
The German brings physicality, box-to-box ability, experience and one quality that has always defined his game: his ability to make late runs from midfield. He is not simply a player who can win the ball back and distribute it. He can also get into the penalty area and become an attacking threat.
Goretzka Ends an Eight-Year Spell at Bayern
A move to the Premier League would definitively close a long chapter in German soccer.
Goretzka left Bayern Munich this summer after eight seasons and 312 appearances for the Bavarian giants. During that period, he recorded 51 goals and 53 assists, impressive numbers for a player who spent most of his career operating from midfield.
He was also a key part of one of Bayern’s greatest recent teams.
The German played an important role in the side that won the UEFA Champions League in 2020 after defeating Paris Saint-Germain in the final. During those years, his presence in midfield became one of the Bavarian club’s biggest strengths.
However, his role gradually diminished over the last few seasons until the time finally came for both sides to go their separate ways.
There has been no shortage of interest.
Clubs such as Atlético de Madrid, Juventus, AC Milan, Inter Milan and Arsenal have all been linked with the German during the transfer window, although none of those possibilities have resulted in an agreement so far.
A Free Transfer, but Not Exactly a Cheap One
Goretzka’s status as a free agent makes things much easier for Aston Villa, but that does not necessarily mean signing him will be inexpensive.
According to reports from Germany, the midfielder is seeking a salary of around €7 million net per season, in addition to a signing bonus that could reach €10 million.
That could be one of the key points in negotiations.
Villa would not have to pay Bayern a transfer fee for his rights, but the club would still need to make a significant financial commitment to convince the midfielder.
Even so, the opportunity to sign a player with more than 300 appearances for Bayern and extensive international experience without paying a transfer fee is difficult to ignore.
How Could Goretzka Help Emery’s Aston Villa?
The club’s need for another midfielder also plays an important role.
Aston Villa lost options in the middle of the pitch following Youri Tielemans’ move to Manchester United and Enzo Barrenechea’s departure for Benfica.
The club responded by signing João Gomes from Wolverhampton Wanderers, but Emery still needs greater depth in that area. Even 19-year-old George Hemmings received opportunities during preseason because of the limited number of options available.
That is where Goretzka comes in.
His physical qualities appear well suited to the Premier League. He can contribute to the press, compete in duels, cover ground quickly and provide an additional presence inside the penalty area when Villa attack. His experience would also allow Emery to use him in different situations without requiring too much time before taking on significant responsibilities.
Tactically, he offers several possibilities. He can play alongside a more defensive midfielder, operate in a double pivot or be given greater freedom to push forward and join the attack.
For a coach like Unai Emery, who demands tactical discipline but also needs midfielders capable of reading different phases of a match, Goretzka’s profile is particularly interesting.
The negotiations still have to overcome the financial obstacle.
But if Aston Villa and Leon Goretzka can find common ground, the Birmingham club could land an experienced, physical midfielder with hundreds of matches at the highest level without paying a transfer fee.
And for Goretzka, the Premier League could become the perfect stage for the next chapter of his career.
