Arsenal sign Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa for up to £55 million

  • Arsenal have completed the signing of Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa in a deal worth up to £55 million, giving Mikel Arteta another defensive option as the reigning Premier League champions begin their title defense.

Arsenal have completed the signing of England international defender Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa in a deal worth up to £55 million. The 28-year-old has signed a four-year contract with an option for an additional 12 months, becoming another important addition to Mikel Arteta's squad.

The Gunners add another defensive reinforcement

According to The Athletic, Arsenal will initially pay £51 million, with a further £4 million potentially due in performance-related add-ons.

Konsa completed his medical before finalizing the move and joins an ambitious summer recruitment campaign at the London club.

His arrival follows the signings of Christos Tzolis, Bruno Guimaraes and Illan Meslier, further increasing the options available to Arteta.

Arteta explains Arsenal's strategy

The Spanish manager has made it clear that Arsenal's activity in the summer transfer window is focused on improving the squad and maintaining their competitive edge after winning the Premier League.

Ahead of the Community Shield victory over Manchester City, Arteta explained that the club had identified areas where additional depth was required.

"We want to improve and evolve the squad. To do that, we identified some areas that could be strengthened, and that's what we're trying to do," said the Arsenal manager.

Konsa leaves Aston Villa after 286 appearances

Konsa leaves Villa Park after making 286 appearances for Aston Villa since joining the club in 2019.

The defender arrives in London after helping England, coached by Thomas Tuchel, reach the semifinals of the 2026 World Cup.

His departure represents another significant change to Unai Emery's squad this summer. Morgan Rogers joined Chelsea, Lucas Digne returned to Paris Saint-Germain, while Youri Tielemans moved to Manchester United.

There have also been continued rumors surrounding Emiliano Martínez and Ollie Watkins.

A versatile addition for Arteta

One of Konsa's biggest strengths is his versatility. Although primarily a center-back, he can also operate as a right-back.

That flexibility could prove particularly valuable for Arteta, especially with William Saliba dealing with back problems and Jurrien Timber sidelined with a groin injury.

With the Premier League season already underway, Arsenal will hope their new defender can adapt quickly and help the team compete for the biggest prizes of the campaign.
