Real Madrid Head Into the Derby Against Atlético Madrid With Doubts: Injuries, Returns and Key Decisions for Arbeloa
Real Madrid head into the Madrid derby with several question marks: key injuries, uncertain returns and tactical decisions that could shape the clash with Atlético.
Real Madrid barely had time to celebrate their victory over Manchester City in the Champions League before turning their attention to another huge challenge: the Madrid derby against Atlético Madrid. However, the team managed by Álvaro Arbeloa arrives at Sunday’s clash at the Santiago Bernabéu surrounded by several uncertainties that could shape the approach to the match.
The past few weeks have been a mix of emotions for Los Blancos. On one hand, the European win boosted the squad’s confidence. On the other, a demanding schedule and several injuries have left the coach dealing with a tactical puzzle in multiple areas of the pitch.
The derby arrives at a crucial moment in the season. With Barcelona holding a four-point lead at the top of LaLiga, Real Madrid know any slip-up could directly impact the title race. Standing in their way is an Atlético side that, although not leading the table, still has plenty to say in the battle for the championship.
Courtois' absence is taking a toll on Real Madrid
The main concern for the Merengue side has a clear name: Thibaut Courtois. The Belgian goalkeeper suffered a muscle injury in his thigh during the match against Manchester City, which is expected to sideline him for around six weeks, according to medical reports cited by various outlets.
His absence does not only affect the derby. It represents a major blow for the team during a stretch of the season where LaLiga and the Champions League are on the line.
Courtois is not just the starting goalkeeper. He is one of the defensive leaders of the team, crucial for his reflexes, command of the area and ability to organize the back line. Without him, Real Madrid lose a player who has often made the difference in big matches.
With that in mind, Andriy Lunin will take over between the posts. The Ukrainian already stepped in at the Etihad Stadium after Courtois’ injury and delivered a solid performance. However, the derby atmosphere will present a completely different test, with greater pressure and an opponent capable of punishing any mistake.
Arbeloa regains players, but uncertainty remains
Not everything is bad news at Valdebebas. In the latest training session ahead of the derby, Álvaro Carreras and Raúl Asencio returned to full training after recovering from their respective injuries.
For a defense that has been stretched in recent weeks, their return could provide immediate solutions. Carreras, for example, re-enters the competition for the left-back position.
Meanwhile, Jude Bellingham took an important step forward in his recovery by partially joining the group session. The English midfielder has been sidelined for over a month, and his potential return generates excitement, although the coaching staff remains cautious.
Starting him would be a considerable risk, meaning Arbeloa could instead use him as an impact substitute if the match situation demands it.
At the same time, the injury list remains significant. Players such as Rodrygo, Dani Ceballos, Éder Militão and Ferland Mendy are still unavailable, forcing the coach to keep adjusting his tactical setup.

A derby that could shape the season
Beyond lineup questions, the derby against Atlético represents a real test of character for Real Madrid.
The red-and-white side arrives with confidence after securing a place in the Champions League quarterfinals and with players like Julián Álvarez in strong form up front. Even goalkeeper Jan Oblak is considered doubtful for the match, adding another layer of uncertainty to the encounter.
Meanwhile, the LaLiga context increases the pressure even more. Barcelona will play earlier in the day, meaning Real Madrid could step onto the pitch knowing they must win to keep pace in the title race.
With injuries, partial returns and tactical decisions still pending, Arbeloa’s side approaches the derby with more questions than answers.
