Why Was It Impossible for Barcelona to Sign Julián Álvarez?

  • The possibility of the Argentine striker joining Barcelona gained momentum during the summer transfer window, but the reality was very different.

Barcelona considered Julián Álvarez as one of its options, but the potential transfer was never truly on the table. Atlético Madrid maintained a firm stance and believed the necessary conditions to open negotiations for their striker simply did not exist.

ATLÉTICO MADRID NEVER WANTED TO NEGOTIATE

Barcelona’s first major obstacle was precisely that: Atlético Madrid had no intention of negotiating with the Catalan club.

Miguel Ángel Gil Marín made that position clear publicly on several occasions, and the Madrid club’s stance did not change throughout the transfer window.

At the Metropolitano, Atlético believed any potential deal had to meet certain principles related to transparency, institutional respect and consistency. For the club, it was not about personally preventing Julián Álvarez from leaving, but rather about establishing clear conditions for any potential transfer.

Atlético maintains that if a player wants to leave, his intentions must first be made clear before a market value can be established. Without that starting point, there was no room to move forward.

BARCELONA’S APPROACH

The second issue was related to the way Barcelona, according to Atlético’s version of events, handled its interest in Julián Álvarez.

The Madrid club believes Barcelona approached the player’s camp without following the channels Atlético expected. The Spanish club also interpreted some of the moves and messages that emerged during the process as a form of public pressure.

That situation closed the door even further. Atlético believed a deal of that magnitude had to be negotiated directly between the clubs and with complete transparency. Since those conditions were not in place, the club decided to maintain its position.

As a result, although Julián Álvarez’s name was strongly linked with Barcelona, there was never a formal negotiation between the two clubs, according to Spanish newspaper Marca.

JULIÁN ÁLVAREZ IS STAYING AT ATLÉTICO

The outcome was exactly what Atlético Madrid had wanted: Julián Álvarez will remain a Colchonero.

The Argentine striker remains a key player for Diego Simeone, and Atlético never considered an easy exit for one of its most important players. The club’s position was also backed by its leadership and shareholders.

Beyond Barcelona’s sporting interest, the potential transfer faced a much harder obstacle: Atlético’s unwillingness to negotiate under those conditions.

The episode also left relations between the two clubs noticeably colder. In Madrid, officials believe what happened damaged institutional trust and made it clear that any future approach will have to be based on respect and direct negotiations.

Ultimately, the proposed Julián Álvarez-to-Barcelona transfer became an impossible mission not only because of financial considerations, but because Atlético Madrid never opened the door for negotiations to begin.
