OFFICIAL! Ademola Lookman Joins Atlético de Madrid
The Atlético de Madrid have completed one of the most important moves of the winter transfer window by announcing the signing of Ademola Lookman, who arrives from Atalanta to strengthen the club’s attack in the new era led by Mateu Alemany.
The Colchoneros were in urgent need of pace, creativity, and one-on-one ability in attack, and they found their answer in Ademola Lookman. The 28-year-old Nigerian international has arrived in Madrid after finishing his African Cup of Nations duties and is ready to join the squad coached by Diego Simeone. His arrival comes at a crucial moment, with a packed schedule ahead and the Copa del Rey quarterfinal against Real Betis looming as his first major test.
Lookman had attracted interest from clubs such as Fenerbahçe, but the direct intervention of Atlético de Madrid and their strong relationship with Atalanta helped secure the deal, bringing one of Serie A’s most dynamic attackers to LaLiga.
A Major Boost for Atlético’s Attack
The transfer was completed for a fee of around €35 million plus add-ons, a strong statement from the board led by Mateu Alemany. The move addresses an attack that has been struggling, with Julián Álvarez out of form, Antoine Griezmann and Giuliano Simeone just returning from injury, and Alexander Sørloth dealing with physical issues.
In that context, Ademola Lookman arrives as a player capable of making an immediate impact. His best performances with Atalanta turned him into one of Europe’s most feared wingers. Last season he scored 20 goals and provided seven assists, and in 2023–24 he delivered 17 goals and 10 assists, including a historic hat-trick in the Europa League final against Bayer Leverkusen.
How Lookman Fits into Simeone’s System
Diego Simeone now has a new weapon on the left flank, where players such as Nico González, Álex Baena, and Thiago Almada have also featured. Lookman’s versatility allows him to play as a winger, a second striker, or to cut inside from the left onto his stronger right foot.
His dribbling, speed, and direct attacking style bring a different dimension to Atlético’s offense, giving the team a way to break down compact defenses — something they had been missing.
Alongside Marcos Leonardo, on loan from Al Hilal, Ademola Lookman becomes a key pillar of Atlético’s new attacking project. With the club still pushing for a midfielder such as Éderson or Morten Hjulmand, the squad continues to take shape for the challenges ahead.
The Mateu Alemany era begins with a statement signing, and Lookman is its first major bet to push Atlético de Madrid back toward the elite of European football.
