That emotional bond became evident in June 2025, when Seattle Sounders faced Atlético in the FIFA Club World Cup. For Obed, it wasn’t just another match. It was a massive showcase… and he knew it.
The match that changed everything and put him on Cholo’s radar
Seattle were defeated, but Obed Vargas stood out. He controlled the tempo of the midfield, broke lines with long passes, won duels and covered the pitch from box to box for more than 90 minutes. So much so that Diego “Cholo” Simeone decided to keep his strongest XI on the field for as long as possible, aware that the young Mexican was causing serious problems. According to sources close to the club, Atlético took notice from that moment on.

Vargas’ red-and-white dream
The winter transfer window finally sealed the story. Obed Vargas signed for Atlético de Madrid, committing to a long-term contract and becoming the fifth Mexican to wear the red-and-white shirt, following Hugo Sánchez, Luis García, Raúl Jiménez and Héctor Herrera.
According to information published by specialized journalists such as Fabrizio Romano, the deal was completed from the MLS for a fee close to $3 million, confirming Atlético’s bet on a young, modern and versatile midfielder.
