Gabriel Jesus is now a new Barcelona player, but his arrival at the Catalan club came with a personal decision that quickly became one of the biggest talking points of his presentation.

The 29-year-old Brazilian striker left Arsenal to join Barça on a contract running until June 2029, in a deal worth around $11.6 million in fixed fees, plus up to approximately $4.6 million in add-ons.

However, Gabriel Jesus acknowledged that he had to make a financial sacrifice to fulfill one of the biggest goals of his career.

“Yes, I took a significant pay cut, but for me, this is a dream,” Gabriel Jesus explained, while also highlighting that Barcelona made a big effort to complete his signing. According to an estimate, his new salary will be around $15.1 million gross per season, after accepting a reduction to fulfill his dream of playing for Barça.

The Brazilian also explained that, until a few weeks ago, he thought a move to Camp Nou would be very difficult. Everything changed when he learned that Barcelona was interested in signing him.

The striker also recalled that he had already had an opportunity to join Barcelona around a decade ago, although that move never materialized. His career then took him down a different path, eventually leading him to Manchester City and later Arsenal.

Barcelona Found an Alternative as Gabriel Jesus Looks to Revive His Career

The arrival of Gabriel Jesus gained momentum after Barcelona was unable to make progress in its pursuit of Julián Álvarez, who had been one of the club’s top targets to strengthen the center-forward position.

The Brazilian ultimately became an experienced alternative for the Catalan side after spending time at two of the Premier League’s biggest clubs: Manchester City and Arsenal.

His spell at City between 2017 and 2022 established him as a highly promising striker, while he later played an important role in Mikel Arteta’s project in London.

Gabriel Jesus Had Support Before Joining Barça

The Brazilian revealed that he spoke with several players before accepting the move. Raphinha, along with his former teammates Joao Cancelo, Eric Garcia and Rodrigo Hernández, all gave him positive feedback about the club.

Likewise, Gabriel Jesus recalled losing two Champions League finals, one with Manchester City and another with Arsenal, and admitted that winning the European competition with Barcelona would be one of his biggest dreams.
