Obed Vargas Sends a Direct Message to Diego Simeone as He Makes His Final Push to Qualify for the World Cup
The Mexican player spoke about the position where he believes he performs best—keep an eye on this, as it could be his last chance to convince Javier Aguirre.
Obed Vargas lives his dream at Atlético Madrid but sends a clear message: “Now it’s time for me to prove it on the pitch”
From a young age, Obed Vargas dreamed of wearing the Atlético Madrid jersey. That love was born on a Champions League night at the now-demolished Vicente Calderón, when he attended a match with his father. Years later, that memory has become reality.
The 20-year-old Mexican international midfielder was officially presented this Wednesday as a new Atlético player, signing a contract that runs through June 30, 2030. While he did not hide his emotion, Vargas made it clear that his ambitions go far beyond the symbolism.
“It’s a dream come true, but now it’s time to work and prove myself on the pitch,” he said.
A childhood passion turned professional challenge
Dressed in a blue suit, shirt and white sneakers, Vargas appeared at the Auditorium of the Metropolitano Stadium, accompanied by his family, describing the moment as “indescribable.”
“I’ve been an Atlético fan since I was a kid. I’ve seen great players presented on this very stage, so it’s an honor to be here,” said the former Seattle Sounders player, who has already completed two training sessions under Diego Simeone.
But rather than settling for the emotion of the moment, the young midfielder stressed that the real test starts now.
“I’ve been a fan and always will be, but now I have other responsibilities. I have to fight every day for this club, which deserves to be at the very top.”
Competing with idols and earning Simeone’s trust
With his debut looming — this Thursday in the Copa del Rey against Real Betis — Vargas knows the challenge is immediate.
“Now it’s time to compete with those idols, battle, play and show what I’m made of. There’s a reason they brought me here,” he stated.
The Mexican also described himself as a disciplined, team-first player.
“I see myself as a ‘box-to-box’ No. 8, someone who can contribute both offensively and defensively. I hope to show that to all Atlético fans.”
From the Calderón to the Metropolitano
Vargas did not forget where his connection with the club began.
“My first memory was at the Vicente Calderón, at a Champions League match I attended with my dad. That’s when I fell in love with this club,” recalled the Alaska-born midfielder, who also admitted he thought of Antoine Griezmann when he signed for Atlético.
The transfer itself moved quickly.
“Everything happened very fast. Everyone knows the love I have for this club, so there wasn’t much to think about,” he concluded.
Obed Vargas has already fulfilled a lifelong dream. Now, at Atlético Madrid, the challenge is to turn that dream into his own legacy.
