Stellar Performance Reignites the Debate
Manuel Neuer’s performance against Real Madrid did not go unnoticed. The veteran goalkeeper proved he is still competing at the highest level, sparking a wave of positive reactions in the German press, with many now calling for his return to the national team ahead of the summer.
Much of the result achieved by Bayern Munich at the Santiago Bernabéu can be explained by his interventions. His saves against Kylian Mbappé and Vinicius Jr. were crucial in keeping the team afloat during critical moments. His performance was so outstanding that Álvaro Arbeloa himself named him the best player of the match.
Relationship With the Coach, the Key Question
Neuer, a World Cup champion in 2014, retired from the German national team in 2024 and, until now, had shown no intention of returning. However, his current level has reopened the debate about a possible inclusion in Julian Nagelsmann’s squad for upcoming international fixtures.
Nevertheless, there is a factor complicating the situation: his relationship with the current head coach. According to German legend Lothar Matthäus, there is some tension between the two. He even mentioned a striking episode: Nagelsmann did not congratulate Neuer on his 40th birthday during a training camp, and when asked about it, claimed he was unaware of the date.
For Matthäus, Neuer remains one of the best goalkeepers in the world, and the recurring injuries of Marc-André ter Stegen —considered his natural successor— have further intensified the debate about his return to the “Mannschaft.”
Neuer’s Own Stance
However, Neuer himself seems clear about his focus. After the match in Madrid, when asked about a potential return to the national team, he was firm: it is not a topic he wants to address, and his mind is fully focused on Bayern Munich.
Even so, in Germany the demand is evident: many want to see “Manu” back guarding the net at the World Cup. The big question remains whether his relationship with Nagelsmann will allow that return to become a reality.
