Cristiano Ronaldo ends his knockout-stage World Cup drought to keep Portugal alive
El Bicho salvaged a draw for the Portuguese in Toronto, Canada, and finally shook off his long-standing World Cup knockout-stage frustration.
It had to be Cristiano Ronaldo.
Just when Portugal looked beaten by Croatia at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, El Bicho stepped up, converting a penalty in the 68th minute to break his long-standing drought in World Cup knockout stages and, in the process, keep his team alive in the tournament.
The Commander checked off one of the few remaining boxes in his extraordinary career. His penalty, his 11th World Cup goal, leveled the match and ended an eight-game scoring drought in World Cup knockout rounds, with the breakthrough finally coming in his ninth appearance at that stage of the tournament.
The Madeira native is now tied for 10th on the FIFA World Cup's all-time scoring list with Germany's Jürgen Klinsmann and Hungary's Sándor Kocsis. He sits just one goal behind Brazil legend Pelé, and two shy of England's Harry Kane and France's Just Fontaine.
The all-time top five World Cup scorers are Lionel Messi (19), Kylian Mbappé (18), Miroslav Klose (16), Ronaldo Nazário (15), and Gerd Müller (14).
This latest milestone adds another chapter to Cristiano Ronaldo's remarkable international legacy as he continues to climb football's most prestigious scoring rankings.
THE DROUGHT IS OVER AND ANOTHER RECORDS FALLS
Before this match, CR7 had played in World Cup knockout games in 2006, 2010, 2018 and 2022 without finding the net. He did not have that opportunity at Brazil 2014, as Portugal failed to advance beyond the group stage.
The wait ended in Toronto, Canada, where he turned the score to 1–1—following a goal by the Portuguese player that VAR had disallowed for offside in the 60th minute—thereby paving the way for his team's qualification.
The goal also proved that, even at 41 years and 147 days old, Ronaldo remains a difference-maker. He became the oldest player ever to score in a World Cup knockout match, surpassing fellow Portuguese defender Pepe (39) and Cameroon legend Roger Milla (38).
Ronaldo also became the oldest Player of the Match in a World Cup knockout game, eclipsing Olivier Giroud (36) and Lionel Messi (35).
The award, however, sparked debate. Many felt Goncalo Ramos, whose late winner sent Portugal into the Round of 16, was the more deserving recipient. Ronaldo had already been substituted in the 81st minute and was watching from the bench when Portugal scored the decisive goal.
CR7'S REDEMPTION AT THE 2026 WORLD CUP
The goal also demonstrated the Portuguese forward's redemption in this 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Ronaldo arrived at the 2026 FIFA World Cup carrying a five-match scoring drought in World Cup play and had gone 10 consecutive games without a goal in major international tournaments.
He quickly became the target of criticism, particularly after failing to score against the Democratic Republic of the Congo in Portugal's opener in Houston, while fellow stars Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe, and Erling Haaland all found the net from the opening matchday.
CR7 answered with a brace in Portugal's 5-0 rout of Uzbekistan, becoming the first player ever to score in six different FIFA World Cups. He also reached 10 career World Cup goals, overtaking Eusebio as Portugal's all-time leading scorer in the tournament.
After being kept off the scoresheet against Colombia, the challenge against Croatia looked all too familiar as the clock kept ticking. But Cristiano delivered when Portugal needed him most, lifting a huge weight off his shoulders with a crucial equalizer that breathed new life into the Selecao. Even after being substituted, he watched from the bench as Portugal completed the comeback to book its place in the Round of 16.
Ronaldo may no longer be at the peak of his powers, but as long as Portugal remains in the tournament, he'll keep searching for another opportunity to add to his remarkable World Cup legacy—and to football history.
