Mourinho’s Comments on Vinícius Jr. Spark Controversy in England

Criticism of José Mourinho has surged in England following his remarks about Vinícius Jr.’s goal celebration in the Benfica vs. Real Madrid match, overlooking the alleged racist insult by Gianluca Prestianni and “absurdly” recalling that Eusébio played for Benfica.

The Portuguese coach stated at a press conference:

“I told him: you scored an incredible goal, why celebrate like that? Why not like Di Stéfano, Pelé, or Eusébio? The last thing this club is, is racist. They (Vinícius and Prestianni) told me different things, but I want to be independent.”

His words sparked a wave of criticism from journalists, anti-racism associations, and former players in England.

“Mourinho has hit rock bottom with his attempt to justify racism and blame the victim,” wrote the British newspaper The Times. The column emphasizes that, even though it may never be known whether Prestianni insulted Vinícius, Mourinho excused and justified him.

Similarly, The Athletic called Mourinho’s behavior “the worst of his career,” criticizing his comments about Eusébio as a form of absurd and surreal emotional manipulation.

Former players commenting on the match on British TV also questioned the coach:

Theo Walcott:

“I love everything Mourinho has done for football, but here he made a bad decision. This was the one night he shouldn’t have spoken on camera.”

Clarence Seedorf:

“It seems like he’s saying that if Vinícius provokes you, you can be racist toward him. That’s a huge mistake. We should never justify racist insults. Vinícius has suffered enough already.”

The controversy comes after the match in Lisbon was paused for eight minutes following Vinícius’ report of a presumed racist insult by Prestianni, after celebrating Real Madrid’s goal in the 0-1 win.
