Benfica Issues Strong Statement, Denounces Smear Campaign Against Prestianni
Benfica Reaffirms Support for Prestianni, Denounces Smear Campaign After Vinícius Jr. Incident
Benfica reiterated on Wednesday that it “supports and believes in” its Argentine winger Gianluca Prestianni following racism accusations involving Brazilian Vinícius Jr., denouncing a “smear campaign” against the player.
In a statement on its official website, the club emphasized that Prestianni has always shown respect toward opponents, institutions, and Benfica’s core principles, and expressed regret over the defamation campaign targeting him.
The Lisbon club said it will address the measures announced by UEFA with collaboration, transparency, and clarity, reaffirming its commitment to equality, respect, and inclusion—values central to Benfica’s identity, with Eusébio as its greatest symbol.
The Incident in Lisbon
The incident occurred at the Estádio da Luz during Tuesday’s match between Real Madrid and Benfica, which ended 0-1 for the visitors thanks to a goal from Vinícius Jr.
At 51:26, after celebrating the goal, Vinícius reported to French referee François Letexier that Prestianni allegedly directed racist insults at him. This triggered UEFA’s anti-racism protocol, pausing the match for eight minutes.
