Guardiola acknowledges Real Madrid’s blow but still believes in a comeback
The blow at the Bernabéu was severe and left Manchester City in a difficult position. Even so, their manager believes the tie is far from over.
A Bernabéu night that punished Manchester City
Manchester City suffered a heavy defeat at the Santiago Bernabéu, falling 3-0 to Real Madrid in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League Round of 16, a result that leaves the English side with a daunting challenge ahead of the return match.
The team managed by Pep Guardiola had stretches of possession and several attacking sequences, but Real Madrid proved far more clinical in decisive moments. Every defensive lapse or misplaced pass in dangerous areas was punished by the Spanish side, which took advantage of transitions and efficiency in front of goal to build a commanding lead.
Guardiola admits the setback but not the end of the tie
After the match, Guardiola acknowledged the severity of the result and admitted that Real Madrid made the most of its opportunities. The Catalan manager did not avoid criticism of his own team and conceded that City fell short of the level required in a Champions League knockout match at the Bernabéu.
At the same time, he insisted that the overall performance was not as poor as the scoreline suggests. “We still have 90 minutes left. I feel the game wasn’t as bad as the result shows,” Guardiola said, making it clear that his team still believes it can respond in the second leg.
The final pass that City could not find
One of the biggest frustrations for Manchester City was the lack of precision in the final third. According to Guardiola, his team managed to reach dangerous attacking positions several times but failed to deliver the decisive pass that could have created clear scoring chances.
“When you reach the byline and have four or five players in the box, it becomes a matter of delivering the right pass,” the coach explained. In his view, that missing final moment ultimately prevented City from translating their build-up play into real goal-scoring opportunities.
Guardiola also highlighted Real Madrid’s defensive discipline and their ability to launch fast counterattacks, a quality that has long defined the Spanish club’s success in European competition.
Valverde leaves a strong impression
Among the standout performers of the night was Federico Valverde, who played a key role in Real Madrid’s victory. The Uruguayan midfielder delivered a dynamic performance, contributing both defensively and in transitions while maintaining constant intensity throughout the match.
Guardiola himself praised the midfielder’s display. “Valverde was impressive,” the City manager said, emphasizing the player’s ability to perform at a high level in multiple roles on the pitch.
For the Catalan coach, Valverde’s versatility is one of his greatest strengths, allowing him to influence different phases of the game and bring balance to Real Madrid’s tactical structure.
