Bayer Leverkusen Willing to Break a Rule to Bring Back Kai Havertz
German forward Kai Havertz could have the opportunity to return to his footballing home at Bayer Leverkusen, although that would mean breaking one of the club’s unwritten rules.
A Longstanding Rule at Bayer Leverkusen
At the club known as Die Werkself, or “The Factory,” there has long been a clear guideline: academy players who leave for one of Europe’s big clubs rarely return. If they do come back, it is usually only at the final stage of their careers, mainly to add experience to the squad.
However, Bayer Leverkusen could be willing to make an exception for Kai Havertz. That possibility was hinted at by Simon Rolfes after the Champions League match against Arsenal, the club where the German forward currently plays.
It was during that game that Kai Havertz scored, although he chose not to celebrate his goal in the 1-1 draw in the first leg of the Round of 16. The affection from the fans was evident from the start: the attacker received a standing ovation when he came on as a substitute and, after the match, he spent a long time in Bayer Leverkusen’s locker room speaking with players, coaches, and club executives.
In fact, members of Arsenal had to go looking for him because his presence was delaying the English team’s travel itinerary.
The Bond Between Kai Havertz and the Club
Kai Havertz spent ten years at Bayer Leverkusen, where he played nearly 150 matches and scored 46 goals. His standout performances in Germany caught the attention of Chelsea, which eventually signed him for around €100 million.
With the Blues, the German became the hero of the Champions League final in Porto, scoring the decisive goal against Manchester City.
Currently, at Arsenal, he is not going through his best moment. Injuries have limited his playing time and he has had few minutes on the pitch, although he is gradually beginning to regain his form. For now, a move back to Bayer Leverkusen appears complicated, as Mikel Arteta still counts on him and has given him minutes since his return from injury.
A return home does not seem imminent. However, at Bayer Leverkusen the affection for Kai Havertz remains intact, and the player himself has shown that he still has a strong connection with the club. For that reason, even if it means breaking its own rule, Die Werkself continues to keep the German forward on its radar as an option that could gain momentum if things do not go as planned for him in the Premier League.
