Rio Ave arrived with confidence after securing their first victory of the season against Estoril, but they knew they could not afford to easily drop points at home. The problem was that Sporting came out determined to attack from the opening minute and quickly turned the match into a nightmare for the hosts.

Flávio Gonçalves Starts a Perfect Night for Sporting

The opening minutes showed a much more aggressive Sporting side. Rio Ave tried to patiently build from the back, but the visitors’ pressure prevented them from maintaining possession for long periods.

The reward came almost immediately.

In the fifth minute, Issa Doumbia found space and played an excellent through ball to Flávio Gonçalves, who finished the move to open the scoring and begin an outstanding individual performance.

Rio Ave attempted to respond with crosses and attacks down the wings. They even began to enjoy more possession as Sporting reduced the intensity of their press and waited for opportunities to attack on the counter.

And that strategy worked.

In the 19th minute, a quick transition ended with Gonçalves finding Geny Catamo, who unleashed a powerful strike to make it 2-0. The young Portuguese player already had a goal and an assist before the first 20 minutes had been completed.

Luis Javier Suárez Turns the Victory Into a Rout

Sporting still had much more to offer.

In the 26th minute, Catamo appeared again with a shot that struck the post. Luis Javier Suárez reacted quickest to the rebound and took advantage to score the third.

The Colombian striker needed only another 11 minutes to celebrate again.

In the 37th minute, Suárez finished another excellent attacking move to complete his brace and make it a commanding 4-0 before halftime. The Colombian, who had already scored against FC Alverca on the previous matchday, delivered again in front of goal and reached three goals in his last two league matches.

Rio Ave simply had no answer.

Every turnover seemed to turn into another opportunity for Sporting, while the speed of Gonçalves and Catamo, combined with Suárez’s ability to find space inside the box, completely dismantled the home side’s game plan.

Sporting Control the Lead and Remain Unbeaten

The second half told a completely different story.

With a four-goal advantage, Rui Borges’ team considerably lowered the tempo. There was no longer any need to take unnecessary risks, and Sporting focused on managing possession and controlling the attempts of a Rio Ave side that, for its part, became more organized defensively to prevent the rout from getting even worse.

The chances became less frequent, and the scoreline did not change again.

Sporting’s real work had already been completed during 37 devastating minutes.

With the 4-0 victory, the Lions move to 10 points after four matchdays, with three wins and one draw, maintaining their unbeaten start to the Liga Portugal season.

But beyond the result, Sporting showed just how dangerous they can be when given space.

Flávio Gonçalves shined from the opening minutes, Geny Catamo was decisive once again and Luis Javier Suárez delivered a brace.

A victory built on a devastating first half and another warning from Sporting to the rest of Liga Portugal.
