Sainz stepped up when the match was beginning to get complicated for Porto. Rio Ave were pushing for an equalizer, but a move down the right ended with an assist from Inbeom Hwang, allowing the Spaniard to finish first-time and make it 2-0.

The Basque winger broke down in tears, lifted his shirt to reveal another underneath that read “Te quiero, mamá” (“I love you, Mom”), then raised his hands and knelt down to pay tribute to her. The emotion behind the celebration was unmistakable.

The message remained visible as his teammates gathered around him to share an especially personal moment.

The 2-0 win over Rio Ave therefore delivered two major storylines for Porto: Nehuén Pérez returned to the starting lineup and scored, while Borja Sainz ended his scoring drought with an emotional tribute to his mother.
