Former River Plate Player Becomes New Boca Juniors Signing
Boca sign a striker with ties to their fiercest rival, sparking debate across Argentine football.
The world of Boca Juniors never slows down. Just when the agenda seemed to quiet, a new name emerged to raise the temperature once again. In recent hours, the club confirmed the arrival of another reinforcement — the third addition to the squad in this transfer window. And it is far from an ordinary signing.
The controversy is immediate: the forward has a past with River Plate and also left his mark at San Lorenzo de Almagro, a background that inevitably stirs debate within the Xeneize environment.
What happened in recent hours
In Argentina, some journalists claimed negotiations had stalled and even suggested renewed talks between Estudiantes de La Plata and Edwuin Cetré.
Behind the scenes, however, the picture was different. Journalist Diego Yudcovsky described those reports as “pure smoke.” When longtime Boca insider Tato Aguilera spoke, the situation became definitive:
“In the coming hours, Adam Bareiro will be a Boca Juniors player.”
A short statement. A clear message.
Deal nearing completion
The former River Plate player is scheduled to arrive in Buenos Aires this Friday the 20th to undergo his medical and sign a three-year contract with an additional option year.
The transfer is valued at around $3 million for 100% of the player’s federative rights, currently held by Fortaleza EC.
There were also rumors suggesting River Plate might attempt to block the transfer due to a supposed sell-on clause. Those claims were quickly dismissed by club insiders, and Boca officials insist there are no legal or financial obstacles preventing completion of the deal.
Aiming for 2026
At 29, Adam Bareiro arrives not only to compete for a starting role but also with a broader objective: returning to the Paraguay National Team ahead of the 2026 World Cup in the United States.
The striker understands that the exposure at Boca magnifies everything. Playing time, goals, and impact performances could prove decisive in earning a national team call-up.
Recent form
During his stint with Fortaleza EC, Bareiro played 31 matches and scored 11 goals. The team, coached by Martín Palermo, struggled for consistency and was relegated to Brazil’s second division. In that context, Bareiro’s name began gaining traction on Boca’s radar.
Boca Juniors, which has an open roster spot due to the injury of Rodrigo Battaglia, moved quickly to finalize the signing.
Career path and a new challenge
His spell at River Plate did not meet expectations. Signed for $5 million, he made 16 appearances without scoring.
However, at San Lorenzo, he found continuity and redemption. In 2022, he finished as the club’s top scorer in the Liga Profesional with 10 goals in 27 matches. In 2023, he again stood out in domestic competition and the Copa Sudamericana, establishing himself as the attacking reference for the “Ciclón.”
That form returned him to the international spotlight and reopened the doors to the Paraguayan national setup.
Now the challenge is different. The shirt carries weight. La Bombonera demands results. Bareiro arrives with experience, unfinished business, and ambition.
