A controversial refereeing decision took center stage in the clash between Atlético Madrid and Barcelona, after Gerard Martín avoided a red card for a challenge on Thiago Almada.
The incident sparked debate, especially as Diego Simeone’s side were already playing with ten men.
VAR audio and referee explanation
Referee Mateo Busquets explained his decision after reviewing the play.
“The Barcelona player, with control of the ball, plays the ball and then steps on him in a normal motion. I will cancel the red card and show a yellow”.
According to his interpretation, the action did not warrant a red card.
Simeone reacts to the decision
Simeone reacted with irony when asked about the incident.
“I saw a similar play in Betis vs Rayo that was later ruled a red card. There’s not much to say, the play is clear”.
He also called for consistency in officiating decisions:
“We have to wait for the committee to review it so it becomes clear what the correct call is”.
Despite his comments, he downplayed any direct impact:
“We weren’t harmed. Mistakes happen, just like coaches and players make them”.
