Real Madrid Leaves the Winter Transfer Window Empty-Handed and Watching Endrick Succeed in Ligue 1
Real Madrid maintain their policy of avoiding the winter transfer market for the sixth consecutive year
Real Madrid extended their decision to stay out of the winter transfer market in search of reinforcements to address weaknesses in their squad for a sixth consecutive year. The only move made was the departure of Brazilian forward Endrick, who joined Olympique de Lyon on loan, while Fran García’s potential move to Bournemouth was halted at the last minute.
Since February 18, 2020, when Real Madrid signed 18-year-old Brazilian Reinier Jesus Carvalho from Flamengo, the club have not made any additions during the January transfer window.
That move did not produce the desired results. The player, once labeled “the new Kaká,” never had the opportunity to succeed at Real Madrid, going out on multiple loan spells before eventually leaving the club. At his presentation, Florentino Pérez described him as “one of the emerging stars of world football.”
The club had better results with its previous winter signing, when Brahim Díaz arrived on January 6, 2019, at the age of 19, from Manchester City.
Under its current sporting policy, Real Madrid view the summer transfer window as the key moment to shape their squad and do not consider mid-season signings for the first team. However, in the past there were winter arrivals who left a lasting mark, such as Marcelo and Gonzalo Higuaín in January 2007, or Casemiro in January 2013.
Other players who joined the Spanish giants during the winter transfer window include Christian Panucci, Lass Diarra, Julien Faubert, Emmanuel Adebayor, Martin Ødegaard, and Lucas Silva.
