Raphinha Defends Julián Álvarez and Takes Aim at Atlético Madrid: “I Don’t Understand What They’ve Done”
Raphinha spoke about Julián Álvarez’s failed move to Barcelona and questioned Atlético Madrid’s stance. The Brazilian drew from his own experience, reopening one of the biggest transfer sagas of the summer.
The failed move for Julián Álvarez to Barcelona is still generating plenty of discussion, and this time it was Raphinha who decided to speak publicly about one of the biggest episodes of the latest transfer window. The Brazilian made no secret of his surprise at Atlético Madrid’s decision to keep the Argentine striker in their squad, despite the player reportedly making it clear during the summer that he wanted to leave.
The Brazilian spoke during an interview with RAC1, where he discussed several aspects of his current situation at Barcelona and explained how his career has changed under Hansi Flick. Among the topics discussed was Álvarez, who was at the center of the transfer market for much of the summer because of his desire to move on.
“I Don’t Understand What Atlético Has Done”: Raphinha Questions the Situation
The Brazilian questioned Atlético Madrid’s decision to prevent Julián Álvarez from leaving, despite the Argentine reportedly making his desire to move on clear.
“I don’t understand what Atlético has done because if a player is uncomfortable somewhere, speaking from personal experience, it’s difficult for things to go well. He made it clear that he wanted to leave,” Raphinha explained to RAC1.
During the summer, Julián Álvarez had expressed that a transfer could be the best option, while Barcelona attempted to move forward with a deal that ultimately failed to materialize.
The Madrid club firmly denied any possibility of selling the striker to Barça. The club’s official stance was also linked to the player’s contract situation and the significant figure of his release clause.
From Potential Transfer to a New Chapter for Julián Álvarez
The failed Julián Álvarez move to Barcelona was one of the biggest stories of the transfer window. Manchester City and Arsenal were also linked with the striker, but neither option progressed, and Barça eventually signed Gabriel Jesus.
Álvarez remains at Atlético Madrid, with a contract running until 2030 and a €500 million release clause. It has also been reported that he could change agents, a decision that could influence his next career moves.

Raphinha Is Enjoying the Best Moment of His Barcelona Career
Raphinha is enjoying a flying start to the season as a center forward, a position he said he had never played in such a consistent role before. The Brazilian embraced the change proposed by Hansi Flick, and his numbers have even prompted comparisons with Lionel Messi’s early-season records, although he believes comparing himself to the Argentine superstar is impossible.
During the interview, Raphinha also backed Lamine Yamal as a candidate for the Ballon d’Or. While the Brazilian enjoys a starring role at Barça, Julián Álvarez remains at Atlético after his expected move to the Catalan side failed to materialize.
