Julián Álvarez Insulted and Booed as Atlético Madrid Rescue Draw Against Villarreal

  • Julián Álvarez endured a tense return to the Metropolitano following his failed move to Barcelona, while Atlético Madrid, down to 10 men, rescued a dramatic 2-2 draw against Villarreal.

Julián Álvarez’s return to the Metropolitano was anything but quiet. The Argentine forward was met with boos, whistles and insults from sections of the Atlético Madrid supporters during the 2-2 draw against Villarreal, in a match that ultimately became a test of character for Diego Simeone’s side.

The tension surrounding Julián began before he even entered the game. Sections of the crowd voiced their displeasure when his name was announced, while he was warming up and again when he came onto the field in the 66th minute. His failed summer transfer to Barcelona continues to generate frustration among some of the Rojiblancos supporters.

Julián Álvarez Returns to a Chorus of Boos

Without Julián in the starting lineup, Atlético struggled to create danger during the first half. Kang-in Lee provided movement and creativity, while Jan Oblak responded when Villarreal threatened through Georges Mikautadze.

The match came alive in the second half. Marc Pubill opened the scoring with a spectacular strike from outside the box, but the lead did not last long. A foul by Morten Hjulmand on Tajon Buchanan resulted in a penalty, and Gerard Moreno converted from the spot to make it 1-1.

That was when Simeone turned to Julián Álvarez, although every involvement from the Argentine was accompanied by disapproval from sections of the stadium.

Giuliano Simeone Rescues 10-Man Atlético

Things got worse for the hosts when Robin Le Normand committed a foul on Mikautadze inside the box. Following a VAR review, the referee awarded a penalty and sent off the Atlético defender.

Mikautadze converted from the spot to give Villarreal a 2-1 lead in the 78th minute. However, the Madrid side responded despite being reduced to 10 men.

Giuliano Simeone stepped up in the 85th minute to score the 2-2 equalizer and rescue a point for the Rojiblancos. Oblak still had to make a crucial intervention in the closing moments to prevent a defeat.

The tension surrounding Julián Álvarez continued after the final whistle. While his teammates made their traditional lap around the field to thank the supporters, the Argentine left the pitch alone and headed directly to the locker room.

Atlético Madrid managed to salvage a point under difficult circumstances, but Julián’s return made it clear that his relationship with part of the fanbase is going through its most difficult period.
