Brazil Introduces the “Vinicius Law” to Prevent Racist Abuse

Brazil is taking a decisive step in the fight against racism in football with the proposed “Vinicius Law,” an initiative designed to combat discriminatory abuse in stadiums across the country. The measure has gained urgency following recent events involving Vinicius Junior, star of Real Madrid, during the match against Benfica in the UEFA Champions League.

The incident reignited debate over the need for stricter protocols to protect players and prompted Brazilian lawmakers to demand swift nationwide implementation.

What the “Vinicius Law” proposes

The initiative, introduced in Brazil’s Chamber of Deputes, aims to establish clear procedures for responding to any racist behavior inside sporting venues.

Among its central provisions is the authority for referees to suspend matches if discriminatory abuse is reported. The proposal also includes educational programs, awareness campaigns, and a unified protocol to identify and sanction offenders.

Congressman Chico Alencar, one of the proposal’s leading advocates, emphasized that anti-racism campaigns cannot remain symbolic gestures. Meanwhile, legislator Sâmia Bomfim called for accelerated approval, stressing that racism must be confronted with effective legal tools.

Existing precedents and current measures

Although the law has not yet been implemented nationwide, some Brazilian states, including Rio de Janeiro and Rio Grande do Sul, already enforce similar protocols to address racist incidents at sporting events.

Additionally, the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) has adopted internal disciplinary measures that allow clubs involved in discriminatory acts to be punished with points deductions.

These actions reflect a growing commitment to eradicating racism from Brazilian football, though lawmakers believe a unified legal framework is essential to ensure swift and consistent responses.
