The Precedent That Could Help Ancelotti: Xabi Alonso Avoided Jail
The Real Madrid coach might be pardoned for having a case similar to the former Spanish midfielder.
Carlo Ancelotti, the coach of Real Madrid, is facing accusations of defrauding the Spanish tax authorities of 1,062,079 euros in the years 2014 and 2015 for allegedly failing to declare income from his image rights.
The prosecution is seeking a sentence of four years and nine months for the current Real Madrid strategist, accusing him of 'simulating' the transfer of his image rights to two companies 'lacking real activity' based in
the British Virgin Islands and England.
However, despite the complexity of the case, there is already a precedent of a former footballer who chose to defend his innocence in court: Xabi Alonso. The current coach of Bayern Leverkusen in Germany faced similar
accusations by the prosecution for offenses in the fiscal years 2010, 2011, and 2012.
During the trial, Alonso stated that he did inform the tax authorities about a company in Madeira, Portugal, managing his image rights. The Spanish leader included in his statements the debt he owed to this company
for the transfer of image rights, in addition to the money paid to him by this society for that purpose.
The trial ruled in favor of Xabi Alonso, and he was acquitted of the charges against him, setting a precedent for Carlo Ancelotti, who could appeal and apply the same strategy as the Spanish coach.
