This is How Marcelo Bielsa Sees Uruguay Heading Into the Copa América
Marcelo Bielsa, the coach of Uruguay's national team, thinks that their chances for the Copa América look good, although it's still a bit tricky to say for sure.
"We haven't played since November, and it's now March. The club season is progressing, and overall, the players' performances are pretty even, which makes our prospects seem positive," Bielsa explained during a press conference in San Sebastián this Friday.
He also mentioned the time he's spent with the team, which hasn't been a full year yet, and how that has affected his ability to convey his coaching ideas effectively.
"I've had few opportunities, considering I haven't been with Uruguay for a full year yet, to really get across what I'm about as a coach," the South American coach said.
"I started with some friendly matches against lower-ranked teams, and then the qualifiers began, where the focus is more on results than style," he added.
Bielsa humbly admitted that he hasn't had much influence on Uruguayan football yet but didn't rule out that it could change over time.
He emphasized that the team's imprint depends on success and expressed his desire to see how things unfold for the Uruguayan team in the future.
Bielsa also talked about some players on the team, like Ignacio Laquintana, whom he mentioned has always caught his eye due to his playing ability and qualities for his position, which is why he didn't want to miss the chance to coach him.
He had similar words for Nicolás Fonseca, another player he finds promising and sees as a hopeful prospect for Uruguayan football.
