Manuel Neuer Returns at 40 and Leads Germany’s Call-up for the 2026 World Cup With Nagelsmann in Charge.
Germany confirms its World Cup roster with Neuer as the central figure and young surprises aiming to renew the Mannschaft.
The call-up for Germany has been announced
The German national team has officially announced its roster for the World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, and the main star is Manuel Neuer. At 40 years old, the historic Bayern goalkeeper returns to lead a project that aims to bring the Mannschaft back to the international forefront.
The decision to bring Neuer on
Julian Nagelsmann, the German national coach, was blunt in explaining the decision: "After many discussions, we understood that the three best goalkeepers in Germany should be at the World Cup. That's why we spoke with Manuel and he agreed to return. We plan with him as number 1." With those words, the coach dispelled any speculation about the role of the veteran goalkeeper.
Neuer's call-up, which had been anticipated in recent days, opens a debate about Oliver Baumann, the starter in the preliminary phase. The Hoffenheim goalkeeper is on the list along with Alexander Nübel from Stuttgart, while Bayern's substitute, Jonas Urbig, will accompany the group in training, although he is not officially called up.

The squad of the Mannschaft ahead of the World Cup
The squad combines experience and youth. In defense, names like Kimmich, Tah, Schlotterbeck, and Raum appear, while Antonio Rüdiger will be an alternative. In midfield, Goretzka and Musiala stand out, the latter still in the process of recovering from an injury that kept him out for a large part of the season. Nagelsmann, however, backed the young talent: "Even if he's at 80 percent, Jamal is one of the best players on the planet."
Among the new additions are Nadiem Amiri from Mainz and Lennart Karl, an attacking midfielder from Bayern. In attack, the list includes Havertz, Sané, Wirtz, and Beier, reflecting a range of offensive options.
The German call-up shows a balance between established figures and fresh bets, but the focus is on Neuer. His return brings the necessary hierarchy amid a generational change, in addition to his leadership, but it also symbolizes Germany's quest to regain prominence in the top football event. With him as the last line of defense between the posts, the Mannschaft dreams of becoming a contender again.
