Keylor Navas Reveals How Florentino Triggered His Move To Real Madrid

  • The former Costa Rican goalkeeper shared details about the call that changed his career in 2014, the offers he received, and what his first days at Real Madrid were like.

Former Real Madrid goalkeeper Keylor Navas has revisited how his move to the Spanish giants came about in 2014 and the emotions he experienced upon joining the club.

While still playing for Levante UD, club president Quico Catalán delivered the news that would change his career. “He told me he had spoken with Florentino Pérez, that they would pay my release clause, and that I would play for Real Madrid if I wanted to,” Navas recalled. His response was immediate — he said yes without hesitation.

Before the transfer became official, Navas also received two offers from Atlético de Madrid — one before the end of the 2013–14 season and another during the World Cup in Brazil. Although he appreciated their interest, the opportunity to join Real Madrid ultimately prevailed.

Navas also shared a special memory from his first day at the club’s training complex. He arrived early, spoke with head coach Carlo Ancelotti, and took a photo of himself in the elevator wearing Real Madrid gear, which he immediately sent to his wife. He emphasized how warmly he was welcomed by his new teammates.

Speaking about Iker Casillas, Navas admitted he had admired him since childhood. Training alongside him was a privilege, but also a source of motivation to work hard, learn, and build his own legacy in professional football.
