Guardiola Returns to the Spotlight as Pressure Mounts on Tuchel
England's World Cup semifinal defeat to Argentina has intensified scrutiny of Thomas Tuchel. While the Football Association continues to back the German coach, Pep Guardiola has once again emerged as the leading candidate should England decide to make a change.
England's 2-1 defeat to Argentina in the 2026 FIFA World Cup semifinals has reignited questions about Thomas Tuchel's future as head coach. The loss, combined with several controversial tactical decisions, has triggered strong criticism from former players, pundits and supporters.
According to The Athletic, several England players were surprised by Tuchel's second-half substitutions. His decision to protect a 1-0 lead by reinforcing the defense ultimately allowed Argentina to dominate possession and complete its comeback.
Former England stars Jamie Carragher, Wayne Rooney, Gary Lineker, Micah Richards, Joe Hart and Michael Owen all criticized the German manager, while Jamie O'Hara called for his dismissal and Chris Sutton described the performance as a "tactical disaster."
Argentina's coaching staff was also surprised. The Independent reported that Lionel Scaloni expected Bukayo Saka and Noni Madueke to be introduced for counterattacking opportunities. When that never happened, Argentina pushed its defensive line higher and eventually found the winning goal.
Despite the criticism, Tuchel is expected to remain in charge. His contract included exit clauses only if England had been eliminated before the quarterfinals, meaning his run to the semifinals secured his position for now.
Nevertheless, Pep Guardiola's name has resurfaced. According to The Athletic and Spanish newspaper AS, the Manchester City manager was the Football Association's preferred candidate before Tuchel was appointed in 2024. Guardiola ultimately chose to extend his contract with City, forcing England to move in a different direction.
For now, Tuchel retains the FA's confidence. But with expectations remaining sky-high, Guardiola's name continues to loom over England's future.
