More Problems for Flick: Koundé and Balde Set to Miss LaLiga and Champions League
Just when Barcelona needed stability, two more starters fall. The schedule won’t wait — and neither will their rivals.
Another setback at the worst possible time
FC Barcelona have been dealt another significant blow. Jules Koundé and Alejandro Balde will both be out until after the upcoming international break — roughly a month on the sidelines. While further medical tests will determine the exact extent of their injuries, it is already clear they will miss LaLiga matches against Athletic Club, Sevilla, and Rayo Vallecano, as well as the Champions League round of 16 tie against Newcastle.
Their projected return could come on April 4 or 5 in LaLiga, ironically in another clash against Atlético de Madrid. Until then, Barcelona must navigate a critical stretch without two of their starting full-backs.
Koundé forced off after just 11 minutes
Hansi Flick’s side began with intensity against Atlético, chasing a comeback after the 4-0 first-leg deficit. However, the momentum was disrupted early. In the 11th minute, Koundé went down following a recovery run on the right flank, immediately signaling discomfort in his right leg.
Initial reports suggest a hamstring injury. Club doctor Ricard Pruna assessed the French defender and quickly confirmed he could not continue. Flick reshuffled his defense, moving João Cancelo to the right side while introducing Balde on the left.
Balde’s injury deepens the crisis
Barcelona’s misfortune compounded in the second half. In the 69th minute, Alejandro Balde also requested a substitution due to muscular discomfort. Visibly in pain, he was replaced by Ronald Araújo, who later shifted into a more advanced role.
The injuries to Koundé and Balde add to an already concerning list. Alongside the suspended Eric García, Barcelona remain without Robert Lewandowski, Frenkie de Jong, Gavi, and Andreas Christensen due to injury. Of that group, only Lewandowski is expected to return soon — potentially this weekend at San Mamés against Athletic — although he would need to wear a protective mask after suffering a fractured eye socket against Villarreal.
A decisive month ahead
Barcelona now face a defining stretch of the season with limited defensive options. Flick will be forced to adjust his tactical approach in both domestic and European competitions.
Squad depth will be tested, adaptability will be crucial, and every match carries heightened importance. In a calendar that offers no mercy, losing two starters at once could prove pivotal in shaping the club’s ambitions for the remainder of the season.
