Barcelona’s Comeback Hopes Take a Major Hit; Robert Lewandowski Ruled Out Against Atlético
Barcelona needed goals, experience and composure to chase the impossible… but the blow came before kickoff. A key piece is out, and the mountain against Atlético just got even steeper.
A setback that changes everything
Robert Lewandowski will not be available for the decisive semifinal second leg against Atlético de Madrid in the Copa del Rey. The FC Barcelona striker suffered a facial injury in the match against Villarreal, which medical tests later confirmed as a fracture of the inner wall of his left eye socket.
The 37-year-old forward has officially been ruled out for Tuesday’s 9:00 PM showdown at the Spotify Camp Nou, just as Barcelona attempt to overturn a crushing 4-0 deficit from the first leg. Losing their main attacking reference at this stage is a massive setback for the Catalan side.
How the injury happened
The incident occurred in the 88th minute against Villarreal, when Lewandowski’s face collided with the shoulder of defender Pau Navarro during an off-the-ball challenge. The Polish striker immediately showed signs of discomfort around his eye but managed to stay on the pitch.
He even scored Barcelona’s fourth goal into an empty net after a pass from Jules Koundé, yet further examinations revealed the fracture. What initially seemed like a routine knock quickly turned into a significant absence at the worst possible moment of the season.
Flick loses his main attacking weapon
For head coach Hansi Flick, the timing could not be worse. With Barcelona needing a high-scoring performance to keep their cup hopes alive, the German manager is left with limited attacking options.
Ferran Torres now stands as the only natural striker available. Lewandowski’s absence is not just about goals — it’s about leadership, composure, and experience in high-pressure knockout scenarios, qualities that are often decisive on nights like this.
A depleted Barcelona faces a daunting task
Lewandowski joins the suspended Eric Garcia and the injured trio of Frenkie de Jong, Christensen, and Gavi on the sidelines. Barcelona will face Atlético with several key absences and virtually no margin for error.
Without their star forward, the challenge becomes even more demanding. On Tuesday, it won’t just be a place in the final on the line — it will be a test of resilience for a team trying to prove it can rise even without its biggest offensive leader.
