Morocco Reach Chan 2024 Final After Penalty Shootout Win Over Senegal
The Morocco national team booked their place in the African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 final after a dramatic semifinal against Senegal, decided in a penalty shootout. The match ended 1-1 after regulation and extra time, but the Atlas Lions kept their composure from the spot to win 5-3 and secure their spot in the title clash.
Drama in Kampala: goals and high tension
The game, played at the Mandela National Stadium, delivered early drama. Senegal struck first in the 16th minute with a powerful header from Joseph Layousse off a pinpoint cross by Libasse Gueye. But Morocco responded just six minutes later, when Sabir Bougrine unleashed a long-range strike that left the goalkeeper with no chance and leveled the score.
The second half grew even more intense. Marouane Louadni was initially shown a straight red card in the 53rd minute, but VAR downgraded it to a yellow. From there, both sides traded chances without finding a breakthrough, sending the game to penalties.
Morocco flawless from the spot
With everything on the line, Morocco showed perfect efficiency. They converted all five of their penalties, leaving no room for error. Senegal, under pressure, faltered at the key moment, giving Morocco the 5-3 shootout victory. It marks Morocco’s third CHAN final in the past six years, underlining their dominance in the competition.

Coach Tarik Sektioui’s side once again demonstrated tactical maturity and defensive solidity—qualities that have defined their tournament run.
Next stop: the grand final
With the ticket to the final secured, the Atlas Lions will face Madagascar, the tournament’s surprise package after eliminating Sudan. The showdown will pit Morocco’s experience—champions in 2018 and 2020—against the ambition of a team that has shocked everyone by reaching the decisive match.
The final promises to be a clash of styles and generations, with Morocco aiming to extend their trophy haul and reinforce their continental dominance, while Madagascar chase one of the most unlikely fairytales in CHAN history.
