Is Sadio Mane Retiring from the Senegal National Team?
Reports claimed the Senegal star had called time on his international career, but conflicting accounts have cast doubt on the story. Here's everything we know.
Rumors have been circulating across social media and international media outlets claiming that Sadio Mane's time with the Senegal national team has come to an end—at least as a player. But what do we actually know? Is the story true?
THE ALLEGED ANNOUNCEMENT
The 34-year-old footballer reportedly revealed his decision to Senegalese newspaper Le Quotidien through an emotional letter that he allegedly wrote from Dakar, the capital of his country.
"Know that I sacrificed everything for this flag. I gave everything and always fought fiercely for our country. Your unwavering support has been the driving force behind my success."

The statement was widely shared as Mane's farewell message to Senegal supporters.
However, French newspaper L'Équipe later clarified that the story was false and had been generated using artificial intelligence, issuing an apology for initially reporting it as fact. Meanwhile, Sport News Africa journalist Malang Sane also dismissed the retirement rumors.
The forward was most recently eliminated with Senegal in extra time in the Round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, after Belgium completed an epic 3-2 comeback victory at Seattle Stadium.
He has spent more than 14 years as one of the defining figures of the "Lions of Teranga."
If confirmed, his departure would mark the end of one of the most successful eras in Senegalese football history, during which the forward and captain became the national team's all-time leading scorer and one of the main figures behind the country's rise among Africa's footballing powers.
HIS LEGACY
Since making his senior national team debut on May 25, 2012, Mane has earned 130 international appearances and scored 54 goals for Senegal.
In addition to leading Senegal through the World Cup cycles of Russia 2018, Qatar 2022 and North America 2026, he played a key role in the team's triumph at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, Senegal's first continental title, scoring the decisive penalty in the final against Egypt.
His influence goes far beyond statistics. Mane became the team's captain, dressing-room leader and the symbol of a generation that also reached the Round of 16 at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
THE LATEST ON SADIO MANE'S FUTURE
Although he had previously acknowledged that the end of his international career was approaching, Mané had confirmed that he would remain with Senegal through the conclusion of the 2026 World Cup before stepping away from international football.
However, his retirement from the national team and from football has not been officially confirmed. Mané is currently under contract with Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr until June 2027.
His potential departure would coincide with the beginning of a new era led by players such as Lamine Camara, Nicolas Jackson and Ismaïla Sarr, who are expected to take on greater responsibility in Senegal's upcoming campaigns.
However, in the alleged farewell message, ManE reportedly indicated that he would like to remain involved with the national team in a different role.
"Tomorrow, I will gladly put my experience at the service of the nation, whether as part of the coaching staff, on the bench, or within the governing bodies."
