Who Was Billy Vigar? The Footballer Who Passed Away After Suffering a Brain Injury in a Match
English football is in mourning following the tragic news of the death of Billy Vigar, a former Arsenal academy player and forward for Chichester FC, who lost his life at the age of 21 after suffering a severe brain injury during a match in the Isthmian League Premier Division, the seventh tier of English football.
How did the tragedy happen?
The incident occurred last Saturday in the match against Finchley, when Vigar hit his head hard against a wall. The young striker was immediately taken to the hospital, where he was placed in an induced coma. On Tuesday, doctors performed surgery in an attempt to improve his chances of recovery, but the injury proved too severe and his passing was confirmed just hours later.
What was his football career like?
Billy Vigar joined the Arsenal academy at the age of 14, spending seven seasons with the club. During his time with the Gunners, he shared the pitch with players who have since risen to prominence in professional football, including Charlie Patino, Omari Hutchinson, Remy Mitchell, Charles Sagoe Jr., and Brook Norton-Cuffy. Later, he continued his career in semi-professional football with Chichester FC.

How was he remembered by Arsenal and his family?
In a statement, his family explained the circumstances and expressed gratitude for the support received:
“Although the operation helped, the injury was too much for him, and he sadly passed away on Tuesday morning.”
Arsenal also expressed their deep sorrow:
“Beyond his considerable talent, Billy will always be remembered for his love of the sport, his pride in representing this team, and for his personality, cherished by all his teammates and coaches. Our condolences are with his family and loved ones at this very difficult time.”
