(VIDEO) Marseille Open Ligue 1 Season With Statement 4-0 Victory

  • Olympique de Marseille opened the 2026-27 Ligue 1 campaign in emphatic fashion, defeating Racing Strasbourg 4-0 at the Stade Vélodrome. Amine Gouiri starred with a brace, while Keyliane Abdallah and Pierre-Emile Højbjerg completed a dominant victory for the hosts.

Olympique de Marseille got their 2026-27 Ligue 1 campaign off to a perfect start with a convincing 4-0 victory over Racing Strasbourg at the Stade Vélodrome. The result gave Bruno Genesio's side an ideal opening to the new French league season.

After a goalless first half, the match came to life immediately after the break. Amine Gouiri opened the scoring in the 46th minute, giving Marseille the breakthrough they had been looking for after a difficult first period in which Strasbourg managed to limit their attacking opportunities.

Gouiri then doubled the advantage from the penalty spot in the 68th minute, completing his brace and putting Marseille firmly in control. The second goal forced Strasbourg to take greater risks as they searched for a way back into the match.

The visitors' task became even more difficult when Samir El Mourabet was sent off following a VAR review. Playing with ten men, Strasbourg struggled to contain Marseille, who took advantage of the additional space to put the game beyond doubt.

Youngster Keyliane Abdallah added the third goal in the 89th minute, giving the home supporters another reason to celebrate. In stoppage time, Pierre-Emile Højbjerg completed the rout with a fourth goal to seal a convincing 4-0 victory.

The result provides an important boost for Bruno Genesio's project, particularly amid a challenging situation surrounding the club. Marseille have faced financial concerns and criticism from sections of their fan base toward the leadership, while the club has also operated without major headline signings during the summer.

Despite those difficulties, the performance against Strasbourg offered an encouraging early sign. Marseille showed attacking efficiency after halftime and finished the night with four goals and a clean sheet.

The next challenge will come away from home, when Marseille travel to face Monaco at the Stade Louis II on August 30, 2026.
