Football Stops in Colombia After the Earthquake That Shook the Country

After the major earthquake and the consequent tragedy, the Colombian league postponed matches.

The matches of the professional soccer league in Colombia, its Promotion Tournament, and the women's tournament that were to be played this Monday and Tuesday have been postponed for one day as a result of the 7.4 magnitude earthquake that has caused destruction and at least 20 deaths in several cities across the country.

The Major Division of Colombian Soccer (Dimayor) expressed in a statement on Monday its deep sorrow and solidarity with all Colombians who have been affected by the strong earthquake and announced the postponement of the match schedule for "the well-being and safety" of fans, soccer players, and others involved in the running of the official tournaments.

The postponement

The organization explained that the scheduled matches will be played one day after the original date, at the same times as initially planned.

"The matches will be played this Tuesday, August 11, at the times they were previously scheduled. Likewise, the matches scheduled for Tuesday will be played on Wednesday, August 12, at the same times," Dimayor said in a statement.

"From Dimayor, and on behalf of the 36 clubs of Colombian Professional Soccer, we send a message of support, strength, and solidarity to the families and communities that are going through moments of concern and difficulty as a result of this event," the statement reads. EFE
