Liga Portugal has built a strong reputation as one of Europe's best environments for young footballers to develop, earn first-team opportunities and eventually attract attention from bigger markets. The 2026/27 season should be no different, with several emerging players ready to take another step in their careers.

Among the names worth following, Rodrigo Mora, Issa Doumbia and João Simões enter the new campaign at different stages of their development but with the opportunity to become important figures in Portugal.

Rodrigo Mora — FC Porto

At 19, Rodrigo Mora is already more than just a prospect. The attacking midfielder developed through FC Porto's academy before establishing himself with the senior team. His breakthrough came in 2024/25, when he scored 10 league goals and provided four assists in 27 appearances.

He remained part of FC Porto's first-team project as the club reclaimed the Liga Portugal title in 2025/26, finishing the season with 88 points. His long-term importance is also reflected in his contract: Mora is tied to FC Porto until 2030 and has a €70 million release clause.

After making his breakthrough at such a young age, the next challenge is turning flashes of quality into sustained influence. Another strong campaign could further establish him as one of the most valuable young players in Portuguese football.

Issa Doumbia — Sporting CP

Issa Doumbia represents a different profile. The 22-year-old Italian midfielder joined Sporting CP from Venezia in June 2026 after helping the Italian side win Serie B and secure promotion.

Before moving to Portugal, Doumbia had already gained top-flight experience with Venezia, making 25 Serie A appearances during his first season at the club. Sporting CP signed him until 2031 and included an €80 million release clause in his contract, highlighting the scale of their investment.

His combination of physical presence and midfield versatility makes his adaptation to Portuguese football particularly interesting. The move also gives him the opportunity to compete for a role at a club with Champions League ambitions.

João Simões — Sporting CP

Another Sporting CP academy product to watch is João Simões. The 19-year-old midfielder has already made his mark in the first team and was part of the squad that won the Portuguese league and Taça de Portugal in 2024/25. He also scored his first Liga Portugal goal against Nacional in January 2025.

For Simões, 2026/27 could be about earning a larger role. Competition for places in Sporting CP's midfield is significant, but his progression through the academy gives him an opportunity to become another homegrown player established at the club.

The three players arrive at the season with different expectations. Mora is looking to consolidate his status, Doumbia must adapt to a new league, and Simões is fighting for greater responsibility.
