Jhon Durán has another opportunity to revive his career in European football. At just 22, the Colombian striker has already experienced a remarkable number of changes in his career. Benfica could now be the place where he finally finds the consistency needed to turn his potential into regular performances.

Benfica officially announced Durán's arrival from Al-Nassr on July 20. The Colombian joined the Portuguese side on loan until the end of the 2026/27 season. The agreement costs Benfica €6.1 million and includes a €30 million purchase option at the end of the campaign.

A new story

The move represents another chapter in a career that has developed at an unusually fast pace. Durán began his professional career at Envigado before moving to Chicago Fire and then Aston Villa, where he established himself as one of the Premier League's most promising young forwards. Al-Nassr signed him in January 2025, reportedly paying around €77 million for the Colombian.

However, his time in Saudi Arabia was followed by two loan spells in Europe. Durán joined Fenerbahçe for the 2025/26 season, scoring five goals in 21 appearances and winning the Turkish Super Cup. He then moved to Zenit St Petersburg, where he finished the campaign before returning to Al-Nassr.

That constant movement is precisely what makes Benfica such an important opportunity. Instead of simply becoming another stop in his career, the Portuguese club can give Durán the chance to establish himself in a competitive European environment and play regularly at a high level.

Will the Eagles change his destiny?

His start has already provided a positive signal. After featuring during Benfica's pre-season, Durán made his first official appearance for the club against Hearts in the Europa League qualifying rounds. Coming off the bench, he scored Benfica's fifth goal in the 6-1 victory, making an immediate impact in his first competitive match.

The goal does not answer every question surrounding the Colombian, but it gives him an ideal starting point. Benfica will now expect him to compete for minutes, contribute goals and show the consistency that has been difficult to maintain during the past two seasons.

The €30 million purchase option also gives the club a clear decision to make at the end of the season. If Durán can turn his promising beginning into a sustained run of performances, Benfica could decide to make his move permanent.

For the Colombian, the objective is equally clear: make Benfica more than another chapter in a constantly changing career.
