Cadillac Prepares to Announce the Return of Checo Pérez to Formula 1
Cadillac is set to become the eleventh team on the Formula 1 grid starting next season, and its leadership is already fast-tracking preparations to build a competitive lineup. According to the reputable German outlet Auto Motor und Sport, the team plans to announce its first driver before August 4, when the F1 summer break begins.
Checo Pérez, the Leading Candidate
One name that’s gaining serious momentum is that of Mexican driver Sergio “Checo” Pérez. Last weekend, during the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, Cadillac co-owner Dan Towriss, team director Graeme Lowdon, and technical advisor Pat Symonds were all present in the paddock. Following several key meetings, reports suggest the decision regarding their first driver is nearly finalized — with Pérez as the clear frontrunner.
From the beginning, Cadillac’s F1 project leaders expressed a desire to pair an experienced driver with a young talent. Initially, they were also believed to be pursuing an American driver, with Colton Herta as a potential candidate. However, recent reports indicate that the Californian would only be considered once the team is more firmly established in F1.
Other Drivers on Cadillac Radar
In addition to Checo Pérez, Valtteri Bottas is another experienced driver under consideration. Interestingly, both Pérez and Bottas are also on Alpine’s shortlist, as Flavio Briatore continues to explore the market due to Franco Colapinto’sunderwhelming performance in the lower categories.
Checo’s appeal goes beyond his 281 Grand Prix appearances. His commercial impact particularly across the Latin American market is a major asset for Cadillac. He also brings the potential for lucrative sponsorships, as seen during his time with Red Bull, where he attracted several powerful backers.
This gives Pérez a significant edge over Bottas, who is currently serving as a reserve driver for Mercedes. Guanyu Zhou, Bottas' former teammate at Sauber, also has an outside shot thanks to his close collaboration with Lowdon in an advisory role.
Young Talents in the Mix
Among the younger drivers being considered are Mick Schumacher, Felipe Drugovich, and Frederik Vesti. Schumacher and Drugovich reportedly held talks with Cadillac representatives over the Silverstone weekend, though Auto Motor und Sport notes that no contracts have been signed yet.
Is Checo Set for a Big Comeback?
All signs point to Checo Pérez making a strong return to F1 with a fresh and ambitious project. His skill, experience, and marketability make him one of the most sought-after drivers for the 2026 season. Cadillac wants to secure his signature as soon as possible, but… could another team swoop in at the last moment?
