'He Was There Every Day': How Nabil Anane's Father Helped Forge A World Champion
Don't miss ONE Friday Fights on #beINSPORTS every Friday at 7:30 AM ET.
Behind the rise of a world champion stands a father whose constant presence helped shape every step of the journey.
Nabil Anane makes his first ONE Bantamweight Muay Thai World Title defense on Friday, March 20, when he faces dangerous Thai contender Rambolek Chor Ajalaboon at ONE Friday Fights 147 inside Bangkok's legendary Lumpinee Stadium. The 21-year-old undisputed champion has already accomplished more than most fighters achieve in entire careers, rising from Pattaya gyms to global stardom with massive knockout power, shocking reach, and technical brilliance. But behind every victory, every championship, and every moment of glory stands the same unwavering presence – his father, the man who transformed a young boy's martial arts dreams into championship reality through daily dedication and unconditional support.
Building A Champion From Childhood
Nabil Anane grew up in Pattaya, Thailand, the oldest of three children in a family that understood combat sports intimately. His father had boxed during his younger years, and though he never reached elite levels, that background instilled an appreciation for martial arts that shaped the entire household. When Nabil showed athletic ability and competitive fire as a child, his father recognized something special and committed himself completely to nurturing that talent.
The daily routine became sacred. Every afternoon, Nabil's father picked him up from school and drove him straight to the gym – no detours, no exceptions. The prodigy trained in karate starting at age 6, added taekwondo at 7, and juggled both sports simultaneously while excelling at school. At 11 years old, Nabil discovered Muay Thai and realized he'd found his calling, making the difficult decision to abandon his other disciplines and commit entirely to "the art of eight limbs.”
His father made that choice possible by setting clear expectations. If Nabil wanted to pursue Muay Thai seriously, he needed to give everything to the sport. That could have felt like pressure, but instead it became liberation – Nabil knew exactly what was required, and he knew his father would be beside him every step of the journey.

"He let me do what I wanted. And I wanted to do Muay Thai," Nabil said. "When I chose Muay Thai, he told me, 'If you choose this, go 100 percent into it.' I didn't have any choice left because I chose this, so now I must focus on it. And he was 100 percent behind me."
Rapid Ascension Under Expert Guidance
Nabil's natural gifts became obvious quickly. By age 14, he was training under Mehdi Zatout, a former ONE Bantamweight Kickboxing World Title challenger who recognized the teenager's championship potential immediately. Under Zatout's instruction and his father's constant encouragement, Nabil began demolishing competition at every level. His combination of exceptional reach, devastating power, and fight IQ made him unstoppable.
The victories piled up at a stunning pace. Nabil became the youngest WBC Muay Thai World Champion in history at age 17, and then he captured belts in two different divisions before most Western fighters his age had turned professional. His reputation spread internationally, and in June 2023, ONE Championship invited him to compete at ONE Friday Fights. At just 19 years old, Nabil joined the world's largest martial arts organization, ready to test himself against the planet's best strikers.
Through every training session, fight camp, and championship pursuit, one constant remained unchanged. While coaches taught technique and teammates provided competition, Nabil's father occupied his spot along the gym walls, watching every round, observing every improvement, and silently pushing his son toward greatness. That presence meant everything to him.
"My father was always behind me, always pushing me since my first day of training, not just in Muay Thai, but even in karate," Nabil said. "He was there every day, watching, taking me to the gym. Every single day.”
From Setback To Championship Glory
Nabil's ONE Championship debut didn't go according to plan. In June 2023, pound-for-pound great Superlek knocked him out with a body shot in the first round. But champions aren't defined by single losses – they're defined by how they respond. Nabil answered emphatically, ripping off four consecutive victories while earning a six-figure contract through the ONE Friday Fights series and positioning himself for a title shot.

January 2025 brought the opportunity Nabil had been chasing since childhood. He faced Scottish knockout artist Nico Carrillo for the ONE Interim Bantamweight Muay Thai World Title, challenging a fighter many considered unbeatable. Nabil made history by becoming the first person to knock Carrillo down in ONE Championship – then did it twice more, earning a first-round TKO that shocked the martial arts world. As the referee waved off the fight, Nabil's father rushed into the Circle alongside the rest of the family, celebrating the moment they'd built together over 15 years.
Two months later, Nabil got his rematch with Superlek. This time, with interim gold around his waist and confidence surging, the Thai-Algerian phenom dominated the pound-for-pound great, erasing the memory of his debut loss. By June 2025, ONE Championship promoted him to undisputed champion status, crowning Nabil as the legitimate king of the bantamweight division.
"Since I started, I always wanted to be a World Champion," Nabil said. "I just kept pushing through. I didn't think about whether this was meant for me or not. If you want something, you just chase it. Go get it."
