Why Did Luka Dončić Extend His Contract?
Slovenian superstar Luka Dončić has signed a $165 million extension with the Los Angeles Lakers through 2028, choosing stability in Hollywood and a long-term partnership with LeBron James.
A Strategic Long-Term Move
What had been widely anticipated is now official: Luka Dončić has signed a three-year, $165 million contract extension with the Los Angeles Lakers, securing his future with the franchise until 2028. The agreement includes a player option for the final season, giving the 26-year-old flexibility for his next move.
This timing is no coincidence. By 2028, Dončić will have completed ten years in the NBA, making him eligible for a supermax deal worth 35% of the league’s salary cap — a potential five-year agreement exceeding $400 million.
On social media, Dončić shared his excitement: “I’m thrilled to keep building toward championships in LA and make the Laker Nation proud. I’m grateful to the organization, my teammates, and all the fans who have shown love since day one. This is just the beginning.”
Building Around Dončić in LA
Since joining the Lakers from the Dallas Mavericks in February, Dončić has quickly established himself as a centerpiece for the team. In 28 games with the purple and gold, he averaged 28 points, 7 assists, and 8 rebounds, helping Los Angeles secure the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference before falling to Minnesota in the first round of the playoffs.
The star guard’s influence goes beyond the court. This offseason, Dončić played a pivotal role in recruiting Marcus Smart and Deandre Ayton to strengthen the roster.
Originally drafted by the Mavericks in 2018 after his development at Real Madrid, Dončić spent seven seasons in Dallas, where he became Rookie of the Year, a five-time All-Star, and five-time All-NBA selection.
Now firmly entrenched in Los Angeles, Dončić will focus on the upcoming EuroBasket, where he aims to lead Slovenia back to continental glory. In the meantime, LeBron James, who turns 41 in December, may be approaching the twilight of his career — but Dončić has made it clear he hopes to share the court with his idol for as long as possible. Together, they aim to deliver an 18th NBA title to the Lakers.
